Nightstand Height Guide: How Tall Should a Nightstand Be?

A nightstand should sit level with the top of your mattress, or within about 2 inches above or below it. For most beds that works out to a nightstand height of 24 to 28 inches, though published ranges run from 20 to 30 inches because beds vary so much.

There is no official standard, so the number that matters is your own mattress top. This guide gives you a height chart, then covers width by bed size, nightstand depth, clearance, lamp height and what to do with tall beds and low platform beds. You can compare real sizes in the FUFU&GAGA nightstand collection as you go.

Nightstand height: quick answer

  • The rule: nightstand top equals mattress top, plus or minus 2 inches.
  • Typical height: 24 to 28 inches. Low platform beds need less, and taller beds need 28 to 30 inches or more.
  • Width: about 20 to 28 inches for a queen or king, and 16 to 22 inches for a twin.
  • Depth: most are 16 to 20 inches.
  • Gap to the bed: 2 to 6 inches, so you can still reach it lying down.

Nightstand height chart by mattress top

Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, then read across. The nightstand range is plain arithmetic: mattress top minus 2 inches to mattress top plus 2 inches. The last column shows heights from our range that land inside it.

Mattress top (floor to surface) Typical bed Nightstand height FUFU&GAGA heights that fit
18 in Platform bed with mattress 16 to 20 in 17.9 in
20 in Thin mattress on a low platform 18 to 22 in 21.3 in
22 in Medium mattress on a platform frame 20 to 24 in 21.3 in, 24 in
24 in Low foundation on a frame 22 to 26 in 24 in
25 in Standard frame with box spring 23 to 27 in 24 in
26 in Standard frame, thicker mattress 24 to 28 in 24 in
28 in Thick mattress on box springs 26 to 30 in 29.4 in
30 in Tall frame or added topper 28 to 32 in 29.4 in, 31.5 in
32 in Raised or storage bed 30 to 34 in 31.5 in

The two anchor points come from Mattress Clarity, which puts a platform bed around 18 inches off the ground and a standard frame with a box spring at about 25 inches. Treat the other bed labels as rough guides. Your tape measure beats any label.

How tall should a nightstand be?

A nightstand should be tall enough that you can reach it without pushing yourself up or stretching down. Designer Izabela Tokarski told Homes & Gardens that nightstands should be roughly the same height as the top of the mattress or within 2 inches of it, which keeps them easy to reach while lying in bed.

Sources agree on the mattress as the reference and differ on the tolerance. Ideal Home quotes one advisor who accepts a top 5 to 10 cm taller than the mattress (about 2 to 4 inches), and another who would not go more than 5 cm (about 2 inches) above or below. Ideal Home sums it up as level with the mattress or about 5 cm above, while Dimensions.com says level or slightly below. So the correct nightstand height is level with the mattress surface, and a small miss either way is fine.

Why nightstand height matters comes down to everyday use and visual balance. A glass of water should be an easy reach from the pillow, and a bedside table that lines up with the sleeping surface creates one clean line across the bed wall.

What are standard nightstand dimensions?

No furniture standard fixes a nightstand size. What people call standard nightstands are conventions, and the published figures do not fully agree, so the table gives each range with its source.

Dimension Common range Source
Height 20 to 28 in Dimensions.com
Height 60 to 71 cm (about 24 to 28 in) Ideal Home
Height 24 to 30 in Designer Blair Moore in Livingetc
Height 24 to 26 in, or 28 to 30 in Interior designer Carla Aston
Width 16 to 28 in, by bed size Sizemarker
Depth 16 to 20 in Sizemarker

Carla Aston's two bands explain the spread: she pairs 24 to 26 inches with thinner mattresses and platform or slat bases, and 28 to 30 inches with heavier mattresses on box springs.

How to measure for a new nightstand

  1. Make the bed as you sleep on it, with any topper and box spring in place.
  2. Use a tape measure. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, not the bed frame.
  3. Add or subtract 2 inches. That is your target nightstand height range.
  4. Measure the wall space from the side of the bed frame to the nearest wall, door or closet, and note where drawers will open.
  5. Plan for changes. A new, taller mattress raises the target. Carla Aston notes that a thicker mattress is likely to leave an old nightstand too short.

Mattress height is the one number you cannot guess from the bed size. The Sleep Foundation notes there is no universal thickness for each mattress size, so two queen beds can have very different mattress tops.

What size nightstand for your bed size?

Nightstand width should scale with bed size. A common rule is one-quarter to one-third of the mattress width, but on narrow beds that arithmetic gives widths too small to be useful, so the suggested widths in the table run wider. Mattress widths are from the Sleep Foundation.

Bed size Mattress width One-quarter to one-third Suggested nightstand width
Twin 38 in 9.5 to 12.7 in 16 to 22 in
Full 54 in 13.5 to 18 in 18 to 24 in
Queen 60 in 15 to 20 in 20 to 27 in
King 76 in 19 to 25.3 in 22 to 28 in
California king 72 in 18 to 24 in 22 to 28 in

The last column combines Sizemarker's bands with Homedit, which suggests 18 to 22 inches for a twin and 22 to 27 inches for a queen or king. Opinions vary at the top end too: designer Luis Carmona, quoted in Homes & Gardens, recommends at least 30 inches if space allows, because extra surface space looks less cluttered.

A king bed can carry a wide nightstand, but the wall has to fit it. Add it up before you buy. A queen bed with two 20-inch bedside tables and a 3-inch gap on each side needs 60 + 20 + 20 + 3 + 3 = 106 inches of wall, or just under 9 feet. For twin beds sharing a room, Izabela Tokarski suggests 24 to 36 inches between the beds, which leaves room for a nightstand between them.

Nightstand depth and clearance

Nightstand depth usually runs 16 to 20 inches, and the front should line up with the side of the bed or sit slightly behind it, according to Sizemarker. A piece that juts out past the mattress becomes something you bump into at night.

These clearances decide whether a nightstand works in most bedroom layouts:

Clearance Guideline
Gap between mattress and nightstand 2 to 6 inches
Space on each side of a twin or full bed 18 to 24 inches
Space on each side of a queen bed 24 to 30 inches
Space on each side of a king or California king 30 to 36 inches

All four figures come from the Homes & Gardens clearance guide. In small bedrooms the side space may be less than that, so choose the narrower, shallower piece and keep one side of the bed clear. Remember the drawers, too: a drawer that is 13 inches deep needs about 13 inches of open floor in front of it, plus room for you.

Bedside lamp height: how to pair it with your nightstand

The nightstand height and the bedside lamp work as a pair. Designers quoted by Ideal Home say the bottom of the shade should be around eye level when you are in bed, which keeps the bare bulb out of your eyes, and that the top of the lamp should land about level with your head when you sit up. One suggests a lamp of 24 to 27 inches, and another about 60 cm (roughly 24 inches).

A simple way to size it: sit up in bed, measure from the floor to your eye level, then subtract the nightstand height. If your eyes sit 46 inches off the floor and the nightstand is 24 inches tall, the shade should start about 22 inches above the tabletop. On a 30-inch nightstand, the same person needs the shade to start about 16 inches up, so a tall nightstand calls for a shorter lamp. Check the top's weight limit too, and leave surface space for an alarm clock, a book and phone chargers.

Tall beds and low platform beds

Nightstands for taller beds

Taller beds, with a thick mattress on box springs or a raised frame, can push the mattress top past 28 inches. Tall nightstands of 28 to 30 inches or more keep the reach level. Mattress Clarity puts antique beds closer to 36 inches. If your mattress top is higher than any nightstand you can find, a low chest or small dresser may match better, and our dresser dimensions guide covers those sizes.

Nightstands for low platform beds

Modern platform beds and low profile beds put the mattress surface around 18 to 22 inches, so a 26-inch nightstand will sit well above the bed. Dimensions.com notes that lower platform beds often pair with shorter bedside tables. By the 2-inch rule, that band points to a nightstand of 16 to 24 inches.

Matching nightstands and uneven sides

Matching nightstands at the same height give symmetrical styling and the most formal look, and they suit a guest bedroom well. Mismatched pieces work too, provided both tops stay within the 2-inch tolerance so the line across the bed still reads as one.

Are tall nightstands a tip-over risk?

A tall, heavy drawer unit deserves the same care as a dresser. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission defines clothing storage units as free-standing furniture with drawers or hinged doors, meant for storing clothing, that is at least 27 inches tall, weighs at least 30 pounds and has at least 3.2 cubic feet of enclosed storage. That page does not name nightstands, so check each piece, and do not assume a kit comes in the box unless the product page says so. In a home with children, anchor any tall drawer unit to the wall. Our anchoring guide shows the method.

FAQ

Should a nightstand be higher or lower than the bed?

Aim for level with the top of the mattress. Within 2 inches either way is the usual tolerance. Sources split on which side to miss: Ideal Home leans slightly higher, and Dimensions.com slightly lower. A nightstand well below the mattress means reaching down each time you want something.

Is 30 inches too tall for a nightstand?

Not if your mattress top is around 28 to 32 inches. Designer Carla Aston often specifies 28 to 30 inches for heavier mattresses on box springs. On a standard bed with a mattress top near 25 inches, a 30-inch nightstand sits about 5 inches high, which is past the usual tolerance and will look tall.

Is 32 inches too high for a nightstand?

For most beds, yes. A 32-inch top is right only when the mattress top measures about 30 to 34 inches, which usually means a raised frame or a thick mattress on box springs. Measure first, and if the bed is that tall, a 32-inch nightstand or a low chest is a fair match.

Is 20 inches too short for a nightstand?

It depends on the bed. A 20-inch nightstand suits a mattress top of 18 to 22 inches, which is common on platform beds. Next to a standard bed at about 25 inches, it would sit about 5 inches low and force a downward reach. A 22-inch nightstand fits a mattress top of 20 to 24 inches.

What is the standard size of a bedside table?

There is no formal standard. As a convention, a bedside table is about 24 to 28 inches tall, 20 to 28 inches wide for a queen or king, and 16 to 20 inches deep. Your mattress top and wall space should decide the final size.
