How to Organize a Changing Table: Layout, Drawers and a Diaper Station Checklist

White and grey changing table dresser with drawers, open shelf and storage baskets for diapering supplies

Short answer: to organize a changing table, keep everything you need for one diaper change within arm's reach on your dominant-hand side: diapers, wipes and diaper cream on top or in the top drawer, today's clothes and burp cloths in the next drawer, backup stock and bigger sizes lower down, and the diaper pail on the floor right beside you. The goal is never to take a hand off your baby or step away mid-change.

Whether you are setting up a diaper changing station in your baby's nursery or a small corner of your bedroom, this guide gives you a zone-by-zone layout, drawer organization ideas by age, a checklist of what goes on top of a changing table, and nursery organization tips that keep the changing station working as your baby grows. The layouts work with any changing table dresser in our changing table collection.

Start With the Layout: Four Zones Around the Changing Pad

Create zones: think of your diaper changing station as rings around the changing pad. The closer the ring, the more often you use what's in it.

Zone Where What goes there
1. Arm's reach Top surface beside the pad, or a diaper caddy Diapers for the day, wipes, diaper cream, hand sanitizer
2. Top drawer Directly under the changing pad Spare diapers, extra wipes, pad liners, burp cloths, a change of clothes
3. Middle drawers One bend down Current-size clothes, sleepers, socks, hats, swaddles
4. Bottom drawers, cabinets, shelves Lowest storage Bulk diaper packs, the next clothing size, crib sheets, blankets, towels
Beside the table Floor, dominant-hand side Diaper pail, laundry hamper

If you're right-handed, put zone 1 on the right of the changing pad, so your left hand can stay on your baby while your right hand reaches. Left-handed parents should mirror it.

What Goes on Top of a Changing Table: The Diaper Caddy

Keep the top surface minimal. Every extra item is something you have to reach around or something your baby can grab. On top, beside the changing pad, you only need these essentials:

  • A diaper caddy or small basket holding 6 to 10 diapers, a pack of wipes, and diaper cream.
  • Wipes in a container you can open one-handed, placed where you can pull one without looking.
  • Hand sanitizer for after the change.

Place the caddy beside the pad, close to you but just beyond your baby's grasp. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping diapering supplies within your reach but out of your child's reach, and never letting a baby play with a powder container.

A wider dresser top makes this easier. Most of our changing table dressers are 44.9 to 47.2 inches wide, which leaves room for a caddy next to the pad. The 45.1" white/gray changing table dresser with 6 drawers has a removable changing topper, so the top becomes a regular dresser surface later.

How to Organize Changing Table Drawers

The top drawer is the most valuable storage in the nursery. Use drawer dividers or small boxes so every item has a fixed spot you can find by feel at 3 a.m.

Top drawer: diapering supplies and diaper cream

  • Spare diapers stacked upright, so you can see when you're running low
  • Extra wipes, diaper cream and a travel tube for the diaper bag
  • Disposable changing pad liners and a spare pad cover
  • Burp cloths and one complete change of clothes
  • Nail clippers, a thermometer and other baby care items, stored in a lidded box

Middle drawers: clothes by type

Fold or roll bodysuits, sleepers and pants by type, with socks, hats and mittens in small bins. Many parents keep sleepwear and swaddles together so night changes are fast. If dresser drawer space runs short, hang dressier outfits and jackets in the closet instead.

Bottom drawers and cabinets: backup stock

Store the next diaper size, bulk packs of wipes, crib sheets, blankets and towels low down. Cabinets work well for bulky packs. The 46.3" black changing table with 3 drawers and 2 cabinets and the white changing table dresser with drawers and 2 storage cabinets both pair drawers with closed cabinets.

Organize Clothes by Age and Size

Babies move through clothing sizes quickly, so organizing drawers by size saves you from digging through outfits that no longer fit.

Drawer Newborn stage Around 6 months Toddler
Top Diapers, wipes, cream, burp cloths Diapers, wipes, cream, bibs Diapers or pull-ups, wipes
Second Newborn and 0–3 month bodysuits, sleepers Current-size bodysuits, pants Tops, pants, pajamas
Third Swaddles, socks, hats Sleep sacks, socks Socks, underwear
Bottom Next size up (3–6 months) Next size up Seasonal items, outgrown clothes to pass on

Label drawer fronts or divider sections with the size so other caregivers can find things too. When a size no longer fits, clear it out the same day and move the next size up a drawer.

Changing Table Organization With Shelves and Baskets

If you prefer open storage, shelves are great for items you grab often. Use matching baskets or clear bins so the shelves look tidy and you can see when stock is low. Some practical options from our range:

If your nursery furniture has no open shelves, a small rolling cart beside the changing station is a simple storage solution for accessories like pad covers and spare supplies. Park it on your side, out of your baby's reach.

Keep the Changing Station Safe While You Organize

A well-organized changing table is also a safer one, because you never need to walk away. A few rules while you set it up:

  • Prepare before you start. Health Canada advises getting everything you need ready before you place your baby on the change table, and keeping lotions, creams, plastic bags and sharp objects out of reach.
  • Open one drawer at a time. Several open drawers shift a dresser's weight forward. Close each drawer before you turn back to your baby.
  • Anchor the dresser. Heavy, fully stocked drawers make anchoring even more important. All our changing table dressers include a tip-over kit, and the CPSC's Anchor It campaign recommends installing anti-tip devices right away. Our guide on how to anchor furniture to the wall walks through it.
  • Don't hang heavy organizers off the side of the changing area where they could pull the pad or tempt a toddler to climb.
  • Keep cords and mirrors safe. If you add a small mirror or a lamp near the station, mount it securely and keep cords well away from the pad.

Nursery Organization Tips: A Weekly Restock Routine

Organization only lasts if you restock, and a fixed routine adds a lot of convenience. Once a week, take five minutes to:

  1. Refill the caddy to 6 to 10 diapers and swap in a full pack of wipes.
  2. Check diaper cream and sanitizer levels.
  3. Move a fresh stack of diapers from the bottom stock into the top drawer.
  4. Empty and clean the diaper pail, and wipe down the changing pad cover.
  5. Pull any clothes that are too small and move the next size up.

When Your Baby Outgrows the Changing Table

Once diaper changes move to the floor or the bathroom, reorganize the dresser for a toddler: clothes in the top drawers where they can start to help dress themselves, toys and books on the open shelves. On models with a removable changing topper, take it off and the baby's dresser becomes regular bedroom storage for the room. Our changing table vs. dresser comparison explains why that long-term use matters when you choose.

FAQ

What should be on a changing table?

A secured changing pad, plus a caddy with diapers, wipes and diaper cream within arm's reach. Keep spare supplies in the top drawer and leave everything else off the top, so nothing is in your baby's reach.

How do I set up a changing table?

Assemble it, anchor it to the wall with the included kit, fit and secure the changing pad, then load zone 1 (top), zone 2 (top drawer) and lower storage. Place the diaper pail on your dominant-hand side.

Where should the diaper pail go?

On the floor right next to the changing table, on the side of your dominant hand, so you can drop a diaper in without turning away from your baby.

Should I use drawer dividers in a changing table dresser?

Yes. Dividers or small bins keep diapers, creams and small clothes in fixed spots, so you can find things by feel during night changes and see at a glance when you need to restock.
